Description
The Gibson Custom 1959 Les Paul Standard Brazilian AAAA Top VOS in Dirty Lemon takes the most celebrated Les Paul recipe and gives it an especially choice selection of materials. Built around the revered 1959 formula, this Custom Shop example pairs a lightweight mahogany body with a hand-picked AAAA figured maple top, a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, and Gibson's R9 V1 Carmelita neck profile. The Dirty Lemon Burst finish keeps the presentation rooted in vintage territory while letting the exceptional maple figure remain the centerpiece.
That hand-picked AAAA maple top sits over a mahogany back weighing approximately 3.9 pounds before assembly, giving the guitar a traditional, non-weight-relieved foundation. Full aniline dye is used for the back, neck, rims, and filler, while the VOS treatment gives the nickel hardware and finish the softly aged character associated with a carefully preserved vintage instrument rather than a heavily played relic. The Dirty Lemon Burst itself has the faded, understated appearance that has made this color such a natural fit for late '50s inspired Les Pauls.
The neck is mahogany with Gibson's R9 V1 Carmelita carve, measuring approximately .860" at the first fret and .975" at the 12th. It is substantial without becoming cumbersome, capturing the rounded feel many players associate with a great '59 style neck. The Brazilian rosewood fingerboard is an especially notable appointment, joined by aged cellulose trapezoid inlays, tortoise shell side dots, reissue medium-jumbo Jescar fret wire, and a nylon nut. The traditional 24.75-inch scale keeps bends comfortable and chords familiar, while the set-neck construction provides the connected feel expected from a historic Les Paul build.
A pair of Custombucker Alnico III humbuckers gives this guitar its voice. Both pickups are unpotted and fitted with aged covers, keeping the electronics firmly focused on the open, dynamic character of Gibson's late '50s humbucker sound. The familiar two-volume, two-tone control layout and three-way toggle provide everything from warm neck pickup textures and articulate middle-position sounds to the focused attack and drive of the bridge pickup.
Historic appointments continue throughout the hardware. Kluson Deluxe single-band tuners, a no-wire ABR-1 bridge, lightweight aluminum Stop Bar tailpiece, cream True Historic plastics, amber Top Hat knobs, and lightly aged nickel hardware complete the period-minded presentation. Even among premium Historic Reissues, the combination of a Brazilian rosewood board and hand-picked AAAA figured maple top makes this one particularly compelling. Cream City Music recommends it for the player or collector looking for the familiar feel and sound of an R9 with materials and visual character that push it into genuinely special territory.
