Description

The Gibson Hummingbird Standard Acoustic-Electric in Vintage Cherry Sunburst carries forward one of the most recognizable acoustic designs in Gibson history. Introduced in 1960 as Gibson's first square-shoulder acoustic, the Hummingbird quickly found a home with players across rock, country, folk, and singer-songwriter music. Its enduring appeal comes from more than its unmistakable looks. The Hummingbird is a remarkably adaptable flat-top, capable of supporting a song with full open chords or stepping forward with clear, articulate picked lines.

Handcrafted in Bozeman, Montana, the Hummingbird Standard pairs a solid Sitka spruce top with solid mahogany back and sides. The top is supported by scalloped X-bracing, giving the guitar the responsiveness to handle everything from a light touch to assertive rhythm playing. Mahogany contributes a focused midrange and strong fundamental character, while Sitka spruce provides the dynamic range and clarity needed for a wide variety of playing styles. Five-ply top binding and three-ply back binding frame the square-shoulder body, while the gloss nitrocellulose lacquer Vintage Cherry Sunburst finish gives this Hummingbird its classic presentation.

The mahogany neck features a comfortable Rounded profile and Gibson's 24.75" scale length, providing a slightly more relaxed string feel that works particularly well for chord work, bends, and expressive accompaniment. A compound dovetail neck-to-body joint secured with hot hide glue provides a traditional connection to the body. The bound Indian rosewood fingerboard has a 12" radius, 20 standard frets, and mother-of-pearl parallelogram inlays. A 1.73" TUSQ nut works with nickel Grover Rotomatic tuners for smooth operation and dependable tuning.

Visually, the Hummingbird Standard retains the details that have made the model instantly recognizable for more than six decades. Its large .060" Hummingbird pickguard provides the signature graphic centerpiece, while the rosewood Reverse Belly bridge is fitted with a TUSQ saddle and TUSQ bridge pins. Nickel hardware keeps the presentation traditional, and the black and white two-ply Bell truss rod cover provides a familiar Gibson finishing touch. Together with the Vintage Cherry Sunburst finish and parallelogram fingerboard inlays, these appointments give the guitar an identity that is unmistakably Hummingbird.

For amplified performance, Gibson equips the Hummingbird Standard with the Gibson-exclusive Baggs HiFi DNA system. Rather than using an undersaddle pickup, the system employs two lightweight sensors mounted to the internal bridge plate. These sensors work with optimized individual preamps to capture the dynamics and character of the guitar while leaving its unplugged response intact. Soundhole-mounted volume and tone controls provide convenient adjustment during a performance without interrupting the traditional appearance of the instrument, while the active system offers the feedback resistance needed for practical stage use.

At Cream City Music, we think the Hummingbird Standard remains such a compelling instrument because there is no single type of player it needs to serve. The Sitka spruce and mahogany construction gives it a balanced, direct voice, the short scale and Rounded neck make it comfortable for long sessions, and the HiFi DNA electronics make moving from an unplugged setting to the stage straightforward. Add the Vintage Cherry Sunburst finish and unmistakable Hummingbird appointments, and this is a versatile modern version of a Gibson acoustic that has been inspiring musicians since 1960.
