Description
The Synergy Preamp Module - Engl Powerball brings two of the Engl Powerball's high-gain channels into Synergy's interchangeable all-tube preamp format. Designed with Powerball designer Horst Langer and Engl Amplification, the module is aimed squarely at hard rock and metal players who want the tight response, punch, and precise gain structure associated with Engl amps. The Blue channel is based on Powerball Channel 3, while the Red channel draws from Channel 4, giving you separate overdrive and higher-gain voices for rhythm and lead work.
Both channels have independent Gain, Volume, Bass, Middle, and Treble controls, along with Gain Lo/Hi and Mid Boost switches. That gives you quite a bit of range within each channel before you ever have to change modules. Two 12AX7 tubes provide the all-tube preamp gain, while an internal three-position Cathode Select switch lets you alter the input tube's bass response and overall feel. Engl's preferred factory setting is Position 3, using a 1.8K resistor and 1uF capacitor, but the other positions are available when you want to experiment with a different low-end response or tighter feel.
A Dual/Single switch also provides compatibility with older single-channel Egnater and Randall modular hardware, although those systems can only access one of the module's channels at a time. In a compatible Synergy dual-channel system, you get the full Blue and Red configuration. We think the Powerball module is a particularly good fit when you need high gain to stay controlled and articulate, especially for fast rhythm work, lower tunings, and heavier arrangements where a loose low end can quickly get in the way.
